Nobook Barcelona

One night we were looking to try out a new place for diner in Barcelona and it needed to be quite central. We heard about Nobook.

As the name suggests, you cannot make a reservation/booking, hence the name Nobook. You can really feel this place is different and has an identity of its own.

From the moment you enter, you see chairs hanging on the wall ready to be brought into effect for extra seating, orange-themed decor, open plan kitchen, but the best is the staff are dressed up in orange jumpsuits as if they were prisoners in a corrections facility.

A bit shocking, the colors and the outfits at first, you get used to it, especially the team is so welcoming and enjoying their own environment. The closest thing to a literal version of Orange is the New Black.

The cocktails here are very creative and well presented. Do try one or two throughout your meal.

Like the cocktails, the dishes are creative as well. They touch upon various cuisines from around the world and are great for sharing amongst each other.

Do check out what we ate.

Gua Bao with Peking Duck
General Tso Chicken

Over and above the main menu, there a few surprise dishes that are served from off the menu so be sure to try those as well.

After a lovely meal of a variety of flavors and there was no dessert or coffee or coffe on offer because their cocktails are supposed to take care of your post meal cravings. The night we went there was a band and it kept the energy flowing throughout the night.

You’ll be walking away from Nobook with good vibes.

TookTook Tips:

  • Make sure you know how much you are ordering as quantities vary per dish
  • Try some of their amazing cocktails
  • Find out what is on their unwritten menu

Karachi is one of the largest cities in the world. It’s got that hustle bustle of a port city, the clout of a financial hub, and the convergence of diversity from all corners of the country.  The city is a crowded, hectic, noisy, an unapologetic metropolis.

Happy in Valencia

We would like to give special thanks to our awesome local Santiago Vernetta for sharing his Valencia with us.

Valencia, the home to la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias and paella, has some great places to wine and dine. Hopefully, these places will purge any hunger pangs you might be having.

La Papparadella

The restaurant offers some great Italian food ranging from pasta, pizzas, and piadinis. It has outdoor and indoor seating. The ingredients are so fresh, whether it’s the greens in the salad or the bufala in the caprese. Some good ol’ wholesome food.

Address: Carrer dels Brodadors, 5, 46001 València

Picoteo de Vicio

You can find some great tapas here. Awesome combinations and the way the food was presented made meal even more sensory. It is perfect for trying a little bit of everything and if someone orders something you like you can order it in the next round.

Address: Carrer de Borriana, 26, 46005

La Petite Brioche Bakery

Great place to walk over to for breakfast. With mini pancakes, scrambled eggs, quiches, cookies and a lot more sweet and savory things on the menu to start your day with a smile. And fresh orange juice.

Address: Calle de Sorni, 28, 46004

La Parrillita Argentina

If you are a real carnivore, then this Argentinian place is the where you should go. The steaks and other meat dishes on offer are just top notch. Have some really good wines to accompany your meal.

parillita argentina

Address:  Calle de Salamanca, 7, 46005

Their ingredients are all sourced from the central market around the corner. So everything is really fresh. With good lunch or dinner menus you don’t have to worry about when you come to dine. If you are you looking for a place to eat with outdoor seating on a sunny day in the center of town, then this is it.

Address: Pujada del Toledà, 8, 46001

If you’re looking for a relaxed romantic dinner with a pleasant ambience and with the choice to be seated outdoors or indoors the Lambrusqueria is a pretty good option . Come here for the lambrusco, of course. Seems like a cool  place to hangout during the afternoons, with a more continental Europe pub feel.

Address: Calle Conde Altea, 31, 46005

La Pepica

This is a touchy topic in Spain and especially in Valencia. Where can you find the best paella in town? People have their favorites and restaurants have their specialities. We looked at the experience as a hole. Paella needs to be eaten by the beach. Therefore, the Malvarossa beach area is the right place to go.  With the numerous options on hand it is difficult to pick an outright winner. An institution since 1898 for paella in Valencia, La Pepica is known to serve the best seafood paella around. Levante is also a great spot for chicken and rabbit paella and would be a good choice if you are looking for something near the center of town.

Straight from the Colombo-ite.

We would like to give special thanks to our awesome local Janisha Biyanwila.

Dutch Hospital of Colombo

The Old Colombo Dutch hospital built in the 17th century dates back to the Dutch colonial era of Sri Lanka. Recently renovated, this heritage building is home to shopping stores, bars, cafes and restaurants, including one of Colombo’s best restaurants ‘Ministry of Crabs’.  With its cobblestone courtyards this outdoor entertainment area has a distinct European flair.  The laid back atmosphere and live bands attract locals and foreigners alike to relax in the evening breeze in the courtyard whilst enjoying tapas and a good cocktail from the multiple restaurant options.  Need a break from people watching, just browse into any of the numerous stores carrying clothes, authentic handicrafts to world renowned Sri Lankan gems.  Also, one can stop by Spa Ceylon for a truly relaxing evening.

Address: Hospital street, colombo

Nuga Gama

Nuga gama, or nuga village is a restaurant designed to provide its customers with a unique rural Sri Lankan village experience.  The tables set over sand under a centuries old banyan tree gives the ambiance of a quaint rural village.  It is one of the few places to enjoy authentic Sri Lankan cuisine in Colombo.  From clay curry pots to coconut shell serving spoons, this buffet dining is a truly unique experience that shouldn’t be missed.  Reservations needed.

Address: Cinnamon Grand Hotel

Seafood Cove

Designed with romance in mind, this outdoor seafood restaurant has just the right ambiance for a magical getaway.  With tables set right in the beach underneath a cadjan-thatched gazebo, illuminated by hurricane lamps, this would be a night not to be forgotten. You can select from an array of fresh seafood and have your choice of sauces cooked exactly to your preference.  The cool breeze under a starry night with sounds of the Indian Ocean lapping at your feet will have your hearts melting as you dive into the rich local seafood cuisine.

Address: Mount Lavinia Hotel

Flow by O, Silk, Sugar 41

41, 1/2 Maitland Crescent has evolved into a one stop shop for a night out in Colombo.  The pool complex of the Colombo Gymkhana Club has opened it’s doors to house a bar, rooftop lounge and a night club.  ‘Flow by O’ is the bar on the first floor, with a swimming pool.  It offers beers and cocktails at one of Colombo’s best prices making it a top choice for happy hour and pre-drinking. You have a choice of being seated indoors or outdoors by the pool. Appetizers and food is also provided to line those stomaches before a fun night out in town/the building.  Sugar 41 is the rooftop lounge on the 3rd floor. With sophisticated decor, beautiful plumeria trees and sweeping views of the gymkhana cricket grounds, this wine and tapas lounge provides the perfect setting for a relaxed night of drinking. It also has an indoor area that on occasion has live bands performing. ‘Silk’ is the nightclub on the 2nd floor that one can go to dance the night away. It has a good crowd with an option for table service.

Address: 41, 1/2 Maitland Crescent

Sky Lounge

Sky lounge is by far the best location to view the Colombo sunset. From views of the Colombo skyline to the galle face green and the Indian Ocean beyond, this venue is a feast for the eyes. Enjoy a cocktail at happy hour; which perfectly coincides with sunset, while snacking on some delicious deviled chicken and fries (a Sri Lankan appetizer staple). The prices are a bit steep for Colombo, but who can complain with that view staring back at you.

Address: Kingsbury Hotel Rooftop

Hotel de Pilawoos

While Pilawoos is anything but a hotel, this iconic roadside restaurant is the best place to get authentic Sri Lankan Kottu Roti (A scrumptious dish indigenous to Sri Lanka, made out of roti, egg, vegetables and/or meat and spices all chopped finely together served with a side of spicy curry sauce).  From cheese kottu to chocolate roti, the options are endless and equally delicious.  Our personal favorite, the pilawoos special (not on the menu) includes kottu roti with roast chicken drizzled with curry sauce.   Pilawoos is the late night street attraction where all of Colombo night owls converge to grab a bite. Disclosure: order from and to the car.  The restaurant is no gourmet experience to say the least. Regardless, this is a venue that has stood the test of time and holds a special place in every Colombo-ites heart.

A bar on the roof of the Canyon Boutique Hotel. It has an outdoor open area and a favorite for the locals. Reminder: must be at least 21 to get in which is a good thing. The views are awesome, with good food and good drinks. It’s definitely one the coolest place to hangout in Jordan.
